Description of first year summer program: At BLG Ottawa, first year student applicants are considered for summer positions in the Intellectual Property department.

In our summer IP program, you'll be immersed in Trade-mark, Copyright and Patent work as well as IP Litigation.

Your summer starts with a comprehensive orientation to BLG and all its resources. You'll also attend weekly seminars to learn about the many types of law we practice. You'll meet your mentor who will answer your questions about the Firm, the work and life in the legal profession.

You'll get hands-on experience working Small Claims Court matters, drafting contracts and pleadings. You'll have great teachers and solid backup. BLG's accomplished professionals will introduce you to all aspects of legal practice, including meetings, discoveries and court appearances. After all, your career development is ours.

Description of the second year summer program In our general summer program, you'll do a rotation in each of our Business and Litigation groups.

Your summer starts with a comprehensive orientation to BLG and all its resources. You'll also attend weekly seminars to learn about the many types of law we practice. You'll meet your mentor who will answer your questions about the Firm, the work and life in the legal profession.

Description of articling program At BLG Ottawa you’ll get invaluable hands-on experience in Litigation and Business Law, or Intellectual Property (IP) Law—work similar to that undertaken by our junior associates.

BLG Ottawa’s general articling program includes rotations in both Litigation and Business Law, with a possible optional rotation in IP Law.

Our intensive Intellectual Property articling program includes work in Trade-mark, Copyright and Patent law as well as IP Litigation, with possible optional rotations in Litigation or Business Law.

Your articling experience begins with an in-depth orientation to BLG Ottawa and all its resources. You’ll also attend weekly seminars on topics such as: motions and discoveries, mediations and settlements, practice management, preparing for trial, and pleadings. BLG Ottawa articling students are also invited to participate in Firm-wide training programs offered throughout the year to all our lawyers.

You‘ll be assigned a principal and a mentor to support you throughout your articling experience. Your mentor will answer your questions, provide feedback and guide you through professional events.

BLG Ottawa articling students tackle the same kind of work as our junior associates. While shadowing lawyers on major matters, you will attend hearings, discoveries and mediations, draft memoranda, contracts and legal opinions, conduct due diligence and research, as well aswork on pro bono projects and cases.

You’ll also manage your own Small Claims Court matters which is invaluable practical experience BLG is proud to offer.
