Description of the second year summer program | At Clark Wilson, summer students are provided the same experience as regular articling students. Students will be given considerable responsibility in all facets of practice, including drafting letters and other documentation, research, preparing opinions, transaction closings, trials, client meetings and examinations for discovery. Orientation, Resources & Training CW Basics is the training and information that explains how we do things at Clark Wilson and provides new students with access to people, information, skills, and assurances to hit the ground running. CW Basics are provided prior to starting legal work, the first three days provide content that will equip the student for their new role with the firm including how the firm works, how to work with your assistant and paralegals, organizational systems training, Firm orientations, user workshops offered by the Systems Department, and guides to Intranet resources and most importantly a one-on-one meeting with the Director of Professional Development. She will take you on a walk-and-talk to personally get to know who you are, your goals and what we have to offer. Orientation activities are grouped together to make the sessions learner and presenter-friendly. A crucial tool for success is the library where the student is provided training, access and subscriptions to WestlawNext, Quicklaw and other databases such as CLE BC. The firm believes in on-going learning and provides group learning sessions and workshops throughout the year. Students are invited and encouraged to attend these opportunities. These learning sessions cover various topics with the goal to develop and enhance legal skill-sets. Each student is assigned a legal administrative assistant. Working with assistants and paralegals is an important aspect of every lawyer’s practice, and students are provided direction on how to develop these relationships. Rotations & Feedback The CW articling program operates on structured rotations. Students rotate through two broad practice areas: Litigation and Business Law. However, there is some flexibility to these rotations and students are encouraged to seek out work that they are interested in. At the end of each rotation, there is a formal process for feedback from the lawyers the students have worked with. This information is shared with the student allowing the student to build on their strengths and develop skills where necessary. Expectations As professionals, students are given the responsibility of managing their own workload. The main expectation is that students’ complete the assigned work by the due date provided. There is no centralized system for distributing work assignments. Some lawyers will assign work directly, others will send out a group email to all students to inquire as to whom may be available and interested in a particular assignment. There is little distinction between the two types of students, summer and regular article, and summer students can expect to receive the same tasks as full articling students. Although students record their time, the focus is not on billing hours. Tracking both billable and non-billable hours allows students to get a sense of their efficiency and a more realistic view of the demands of a legal practice. Work Assignments Clark Wilson provides students the opportunity to work on major cases and transactions, direct interaction with clients and the opportunity to gain a well-rounded and comprehensive articling experience. It is impossible to describe a “typical day”. Some of the work you can expect to be involved with at CW includes: Assisting at junior trials; drafting affidavits and pleadings; observing meditations; interviewing and preparing witnesses; fact gathering in preparation for trial; observing examinations for discoveries; speaking to issues at Small Claims Court and in Chambers; assisting on deals; drafting legal contracts, agreements and letters; conducting due diligence analysis; direct client contact, including attending client events and meetings; representing the firm charity and networking events; and of course legal research. Want to know more about a typical day, contact one of our current students and ask them directly. |
Comments | When students have completed their rotations in each of the business and litigation departments, they will be able to make informed decisions about the type of work that they would like to do and the field they wish to pursue. |

The articling program operates on structured rotations. Students will spend an equal amount of time working in both the firm's business law department (including corporate finance/securities, commercial lending, technology and intellectual property, wills and estates, real estate, mergers and acquisitions, tax, etc.) and the litigation department (including commercial, construction, employment, insurance, etc.).
Students are also given opportunities for direct client contact; effective lawyer-client communication requires training and experience.
