Announcements

The Department of Justice Canada is the Government of Canada’s law firm. Justice employees are part of a proud tradition of providing legal services and advice to over 40 federal departments and agencies.  The Ontario Regional Office of the Department of Justice (“ORO”) attracts some of Canada’s best and brightest legal minds, and handles some of the most diverse, high profile and challenging litigation in the country.

The ORO’s student program offers students the opportunity to hone their litigation skills in new and diverse areas of law while also providing for a healthy work-life balance to enjoy other areas of interest.

The ORO’s primary practice is litigation-based, with counsel appearing in every level of court in the country, including the Supreme Court of Canada. Many of the cases litigated in this office push the boundaries of legal thinking and contribute to new developments in the law with the resulting decisions taught in law school including Bedford and Vavilov.

Summer students will have the opportunity to work in each of the four practice groups at the ORO:

  1. Immigration Law Services
  2. Tax Law Services
  3. Indigenous Rights and Relations
  4. Litigation, Extradition and Advisory Division

Our recruitment process is committed to maintaining a representative workforce reflective of the Canadian society. The ORO conducts a 2L recruitment process and typically hires between 8 and 12 summer students. Subject to satisfactory performance, summer students are typically invited back to article the following year.  The ORO follows the LSO’s recruitment procedures for Toronto employers.  Applications may be submitted through the VI Portal.
