First Year Summer Students

FIRST YEAR SUMMER STUDENTS:

Description of first year summer program: Right from the start, with the strength of our team, and the BLG brand behind you, you will be able to make your mark during your summer student experience.

In our summer program, you will do a rotation in each of our Business and Litigation groups, exploring a variety of practice areas and getting to know and learn from many lawyers.

Your summer starts with a comprehensive orientation to BLG and all its resources. You will also attend seminars to learn about the many types of law we practice. You will meet your associate mentor who will answer your questions about the Firm, the work and life in the legal profession.

You will get hands-on experience performing many of the same tasks as our articling students: conducting research, handling Small Claims Court matters, and drafting contracts and pleadings. You'll have great teachers and solid backup. BLG's accomplished professionals will introduce you to all aspects of legal practice, including client meetings, questionings and court appearances.

Articling Students

When do you hire articling students? We hire the majority of our articling students through our 1st and 2nd year summer student programs. If we require additional articling students, we participate in the June articling recruitment period.

Description of articling program You will undertake six-month rotations in both Litigation and Business Law, exploring a broad range of practice areas, meeting with and learning from many accomplished lawyers.
Your articling experience begins with an in-depth orientation to BLG Calgary and all its resources. You will also attend seminars on topics such as:
• common types of motions in Queen’s Bench chambers
• insolvency and corporate restructuring
• securities practice
• regulatory practice
• litigation practice and procedures
BLG Calgary articling students tackle the same kind of work as our junior associates. While assisting lawyers on major matters, you may:
• attend hearings, questionings and mediations
• draft memoranda and contracts
• conduct due diligence and research
• work on pro bono projects and cases
You will also have an opportunity to manage your own Small Claims Court matters — invaluable practical experience BLG is proud to offer.
You will be assigned a principal and an associate mentor to support you throughout your articling experience. Your associate mentor will answer your questions, provide advice and guide you through professional events.
BLG Calgary articling students are also invited to participate in Firm-wide training programs offered throughout the year to all our lawyers.
